The 7 Principles of Mindfulness

by | May 6, 2024

Many of us aren’t sure where to start on the journey of being mindful. What does it mean to be mindful? I would like to offer a set of guidelines that may help clarify some of the questions about mindfulness.

These 7 principles of mindfulness may give you firm ground to start on and clear a path to head in the right direction.

Non-judging

We all see things through our own lenses, and it may often cloud our vision. It’s best to step back and reflect on our own state of mind by adopting an attitude of acceptance, genuineness, and empathy.

Patience

Patience, as the saying goes, is a virtue, and must be practiced. Focus on progress rather than perfection. Our patience is constantly tested in this high-paced world we live in today. Try eliminating some of the stress factors in your life like overworking, overscheduling, and multi-tasking.

Beginner’s Mind

It’s easy to lose yourself when you believe you have “seen it all”. Try hitting the reset button of your mind and be open to new ideas, perspectives, and insights that you may have been pre-conditioned to view differently.

Trust

Trust is a crucial component of any relationship on every level, including trusting yourself. Be open to communication, boundaries, and safe emotional risks. Start by trusting in yourself by being less self-sabotaging and more forgiving.

Non-Striving

Non-striving is the art of accepting yourself as you are- right here, right now. This includes the good with the bad. It frees us from living in future concerns and past issues. It allows us to embrace the calm of being in the moment.

Acceptance

Acceptance is an ongoing practice we should adhere to for improving our relationship with ourselves and others. Allow others to be different without trying to control their feelings. Love others, accept others, even though you don’t understand others. Love yourself, accept yourself, even though you don’t always understand yourself.

Letting Go

Letting go will create peace and acceptance in your life. Be gentle with yourself and others. Find a positive mantra to counter painful thoughts and release negative emotions. Engage in self-care.

These 7 principles are a great starting point to practice mindfulness. They will help you create a happier, healthier relationship with yourself and others in your life.
